Why Motorcycle Insurance Coverage Is Critical in Kentucky

Under Kentucky law, motorcycle riders face higher risks and fewer protections.

At Queener Law, we believe informed riders are safer riders—both on the road and when dealing with insurance companies.

Kentucky Motorcycle Riders Deserve Better Protection

Motorcycles offer freedom—but also serious risk. At Queener Law, we’ve helped many riders injured in crashes on Kentucky roads. One thing is clear: without the right insurance coverage, the physical recovery is only half the battle.

Motorcyclists Are More Vulnerable in a Crash

Unlike cars, motorcycles lack built-in protection. That means even minor crashes can result in:

  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spinal cord damage
  • Broken bones
  • Permanent disability

Medical costs can quickly reach six figures—and if your insurance coverage falls short, you’ll be left paying out of pocket.

Kentucky’s PIP Law Leaves Motorcyclists Behind

Kentucky operates under a “no-fault” insurance system, which provides Personal Injury Protection (PIP) for car drivers. But here’s the catch:

Motorcyclists are NOT automatically covered by PIP.

Unless you opt into PIP on your motorcycle policy, you won’t receive benefits for:

  • Hospital bills
  • Lost wages
  • Rehabilitation costs

Why Kentucky’s Minimum Insurance Limits Aren’t Enough

The current state-mandated minimums are:

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury
  • $50,000 per accident
  • $10,000 for property damage

These limits are often exhausted after one ambulance ride or ER visit. If you cause a crash, any costs over these limits come out of your pocket. That means your home, savings, and paycheck could be at risk.

Uninsured and Underinsured Drivers Are a Real Threat

1 in 8 drivers on U.S. roads has no insurance—and many others carry the bare minimum. If you’re hit by one of them, Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) Coverage is your backup plan.

We recommend matching your UM/UIM limits to your liability coverage for full protection.

Recommended Motorcycle Insurance Coverage in Kentucky

  • Liability: At least $100,000 per person / $300,000 per accident
  • PIP: Opt in with at least $10,000 in coverage
  • UM/UIM: Equal to your liability limits
  • Medical Payments: Optional coverage for copays and deductibles
  • Collision & Comprehensive: For damage to your motorcycle
